What the Scholar Athlete of the Year Program Recognizes
The Play Chesterfield Scholar Athlete of the Year program, presented by 804 Travel, celebrates high school student-athletes who excel across multiple dimensions of their lives. This isn’t just about sports performance or academic grades; it’s about recognizing well-rounded young people who demonstrate the character and leadership that sports help develop.
The program evaluates candidates based on four key areas: academic excellence, athletic performance, leadership and sportsmanship, and community involvement and character development. Student-athletes must maintain a minimum GPA of 3.5 while actively participating in at least one extracurricular Chesterfield County Public Schools activity. They must demonstrate commitment to their sport through regular practice attendance and consistent effort in improving their skills.
But what truly sets this program apart is its emphasis on the qualities that make sports meaningful beyond wins and losses. The Scholar Athlete program recognizes students who show positive attitudes, motivate their teammates, display respect for coaches and opponents, and actively contribute to their communities through service.
There will be 22 Scholar Athlete honorees, and each will receive a $500 scholarship to support their continued education. These outstanding students will be formally recognized at the 2026 Chesterfield Sports Hall of Fame Banquet, tentatively scheduled for April 23, 2026. In the weeks leading up to the banquet, all honorees will be featured on CBS 6, giving them well-deserved recognition throughout the Chesterfield community and Greater Richmond area.
From the group of honorees, two Scholar Athletes of the Year will be selected, one male and one female. These two exceptional students will each receive a $1,000 scholarship and have their names engraved on the Hall of Fame Wall at River City Sportsplex, ensuring their achievements are remembered for years to come.
